I am the very lucky recipient of a "blogging by mail" parcel from Winnie, who is presently living in Italy and working for Slow Foods. When I began unwrapping the package, and saw the Slow Foods insignia on the bag and wrapping tape, I had a feeling I was in for some regional treats, and I was not disappointed. If you click on the picture, you can get a closer view, and also see the intriguing food pages from her local paper, which were included.
I have already dipped into the beautiful handmade chocolates, from a pastry/coffee shop where Winnie hangs out. They are filled with various delicious and mysterious (each pretty label being of course, written in Italian) creamy things. Luscious.I am trying to ration myself, and make them last. I won't be sharing them, though. There is also a whole gorgeous jar of a locally made hazelnut spread, a sort of whole food version of Nutella, with a mobcap and ribbon on top- and a packet of bottarga-which I have read about and longed to try.
Included was a nice long handwritten letter about the foods of the area (including white truffles, and fine wines, which I will have to make the trip to get!) and also about Winnie's family holiday-Thanksgiving, which has a different ethnic angle. Her American parents' thanksgiving dinner will include some traditional foods reflecting their own heritage. Along with the turkey will be potstickers-for which a detailed, handwritten recipe was included. With pretty much everyone else in the food universe I love potstickers, and will attempt to make some. Stay tuned for this and a future bottarga bulletin.
Thank you so much, Winnie, I love it. I hope Carrie enjoys my package as much as I do yours.
